Former Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte, who is in The Hague after being arrested on a warrant from the International Criminal Court (ICC), won the mayoral election in Davao City in the south of the island nation. This was reported by the Associated Press on May 13.

"The official count showed that he won more than 660,000 votes, or eight times more than his closest rival," the media notes.

The former president's opponent, ex-Secretary of government Carlo Nograles, received only 80.4 thousand votes. Duterte's youngest son, 37-year-old Sebastian, won the election for the post of vice mayor of Davao by a wide margin, gaining 648.3 thousand votes. Since the former Filipino leader remains under arrest, his son will perform the duties of the head of the city for now.

In addition, Duterte's eldest son, Paolo, was re-elected as a member of the lower house of the Philippine Parliament. Two of the ex-president's grandchildren also won the local elections, which "testifies to the continued influence of the family," the agency said.

It is specified that the politician previously headed the Davao City administration for 22 years.

Duterte was detained at Manila airport on Tuesday, March 11. Upon arrival from Hong Kong, the Philippines received an arrest warrant from the ICC on charges of crimes against humanity during an anti-drug campaign. On the same day, the ICC confirmed that the Pre-Trial Chamber had issued a warrant for his arrest. On March 12, Duterte was taken into custody.
