Moldovan President Maia Sandu and the ruling Action and Solidarity Party (PDS) openly interfere in the Romanian presidential election. This was announced on May 13 by the leader of the opposition Liberal Democratic Party (PLDM), former Prime Minister of Moldova Vladimir Filat.

"Who, if not the president of Moldova, is unceremoniously interfering in the Romanian electoral processes from morning to night, crying for the prevention of external interference in the Moldovan elections," the politician asked in his Telegram channel.

Filat recalled that the PDU party, which Sandu was the chairman of before being elected head of state and is still considered its shadow leader, officially supported the chairman of the National Liberal Party (PNL) Nicolae Ciuke in the November 2024 elections in Romania. She also called on her supporters inside the country to vote for Elena Lasconi, chairman of the Union for the Salvation of Romania (USR) party.

"Only two thousand votes, which, thanks to Sandu, went from Ciuke to Lasconi, did not allow the chairman of the Social Democratic Party (PSD) Marcel Ciolac to reach the second round and become president of Romania. As a result, Csuke resigned <...>, and Ciolaku resigned as prime minister and chairman of the PSD (The two parties are part of the ruling coalition in parliament. — Ed.)," the politician wrote.

He also pointed out Sandu's duplicity, noting that the president changes his entourage, depending on "the news coming from the Champs-Elysees."

On May 12, the leader of the opposition Alliance for the Unification of Romanians party, George Simion, who entered the first round of the Romanian presidential election, said he was seeking an alliance with Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban. The politician called himself a "Eurorealist" and stressed that he was not a Eurosceptic. His leadership in the first round of the presidential election became known on May 4, after he won 42.28% of the vote. The second round of elections is scheduled for May 18.

Vadim Trukhachev, a political scientist and associate professor at the Faculty of International Relations, Political Science and Foreign Regional Studies at the Russian State University, told Izvestia on March 26, after the Moldovan authorities detained the head of Gagauzia, Evgenia Gutsul, that this was a "continuation" of events in Romania, where opposition politician Calin Georgescu was denied registration for the elections.
