The doctor warned about the importance of vaccinations when planning a trip abroad

Traveling is always a new experience, but it can be overshadowed by the risk of contracting dangerous infections. To protect yourself, it is important to take care of vaccination in advance. Vladimir Neronov, MD, an infectious disease specialist at JSC "Medicine" (Academician Roitberg Clinic), told Izvestia about this on May 14.
"The national vaccination calendar includes vaccination against diseases such as measles, diphtheria, tetanus, hepatitis B, and others. These vaccinations have been given since childhood, but before traveling it is worth checking whether a revaccination is required. For example, immunity against tetanus persists for 10 years, and if the last vaccination was a long time ago, it is better to update it before traveling," the doctor reminded.
However, he warned: there are diseases specific to specific regions. For example, yellow fever is common in tropical countries in Africa and Latin America. Without a vaccination certificate, entry to some countries may be prohibited.
Meningococcal infection is dangerous in Saudi Arabia and African countries, while tick—borne encephalitis is dangerous in Siberia, the Urals, and some European regions.
According to Neronov, intestinal infections such as typhoid fever, cholera and hepatitis A threaten tourists in countries with poor hygiene. Vaccination reduces the risk of infection, but it does not eliminate the need to take precautions: drink only bottled water, avoid raw seafood, and wash your hands thoroughly.
"When planning a trip, specify the requirements of the destination country and consult with your doctor. Some vaccinations take time to develop immunity, so it's better to start preparing 4-8 weeks before departure," the infectious disease specialist added.
Earlier, on May 12, Olga Chirikova, senior lecturer at the Department of Civil Law Disciplines at Plekhanov Russian University of Economics, told Izvestia about the intricacies of applying for sick leave during a vacation or business trip abroad. The expert said that in this case, you need to get a document from a foreign medical institution confirming the fact of the disease. Then it is necessary to make a notarized translation of this document and provide it to the employer.
