- May 14 — The Eve of Pentecost: the history, traditions and meaning of the holiday

25 days after Easter, the Orthodox Church celebrates the Feast of Pentecost, a special holiday linking the Resurrection of the Lord and the Trinity. In 2025, it falls on May 14th. Izvestia tells about the history and traditions of the celebration.
The eve of Pentecost — what kind of holiday is it
The Feast of Pentecost is a non—denominational Lordly (that is, dedicated to Christ) holiday that binds Easter and Trinity together. Its name means "half way", as exactly 50 days pass between the two celebrations (this period, as well as the Trinity itself, is sometimes called Pentecost). Half of the designated period is the Completion.
At the end of the Feast, the faithful, continuing to celebrate the Resurrection of the Lord, begin to prepare for the next important event in the life of the church — the Descent of the Holy Spirit. The joy of meeting the living Savior is gradually replaced by expectation of His precious gift to people and the beginning of the spiritual mission of the apostles.
The celebration of Pentecost in 2025 — a history
The feast is celebrated for eight days, starting on the fourth Wednesday after Easter. The event basis of the holiday is an episode from the Gospel of John. It tells how, during the Jewish feast of tabernacles, Jesus came to the Jerusalem temple and began to teach people.
The reasonableness of Christ's words amazed the listeners, because they knew that the young man standing in front of them had not received any special education. Seeing their confusion, the Savior said, "My teaching is not Mine, but that of Him who sent Me." In this way, he made it clear to those present in the temple that he was not striving for personal glory, but was fulfilling the will of the Lord.
At the same time, the Russian iconography of the holiday is based not on the described episode, but on one of the few stories about the childhood of Christ. The Gospel of Luke says that during the pilgrimage to Jerusalem, Mary and Joseph lost 12-year-old Jesus in the crowd. For three days, worried parents searched for him all over the city and found him in the temple surrounded by Jewish teachers. The boy communicated on equal terms with the elderly sages, and they listened attentively, surprised by his words.
The eve of Pentecost is one of the most ancient Christian holidays. The first mentions of it date back to the 5th–4th centuries: St. Peter Chrysologos and Severus of Antioch spoke about the celebration in their sermons. The earliest liturgical monuments containing references to the Feast date back to the 7th–8th centuries, and the hymnographic tradition was formed already in the 8th–9th centuries.
Traditions of the Pentecostal Celebration
On the eve of Pentecost, the rite of water consecration is traditionally performed. This is due to the fact that in the text of the festive divine service, the Holy Spirit, who descended on the apostles in the Trinity, is likened to water, which gives life to all things. After the service, parishioners and priests march in a procession to the nearest reservoir, well or spring, where the ceremony is held.
In Russia, on a holiday, peasants gathered in the field for a general prayer service, during which the priest sprinkled holy water on the ground. People turned to God with requests for a rich harvest, good weather, and health for themselves and their loved ones.
In modern Greece, the Eve of Pentecost is considered the patronal feast of churches in honor of St. Sophia. This is due to the fact that the name Sophia means "wisdom" in Greek, and in some hymns the triumph of Jesus is called "the Wisdom of God." There is no such tradition in Russia, but in our country there are several churches dedicated to the Celebration of Pentecost. They can be found in Rostov-on-Don and Pskov, as well as in the Moscow, Arkhangelsk, Vologda, Voronezh and Kursk regions.
Earlier, Izvestia spoke about the tradition and the spiritual meaning of Myrrh-bearing Women's Day.
