The European Union (EU) is developing measures to extend anti-Russian sanctions in the event of a possible blocking of restrictions against Russia by Hungary. This was reported on May 13 by the Financial Times (FT) newspaper, citing sources.

"The EU is preparing capital controls and tariffs to protect against sanctions against Russia. Brussels is preparing to apply capital controls and duties against Russia if Hungary blocks the extension of EU economic sanctions imposed against Moscow," the article says.

According to the newspaper, to extend the restrictions, bypassing Hungary, a large part of the votes of the union's members will be required. At the same time, the initiative may affect frozen Russian foreign exchange reserves worth about 200 billion euros. It is noted that the EU plans to transfer them to a "different legal basis" to bypass the unanimous approval of all participating countries.

In addition, capital controls are designed to prevent an "influx of funds" into Russia.

The head of EU diplomacy, Kaya Kallas, at a press conference following the meeting of EU foreign ministers in Warsaw on May 8, said that the European Commission (EC) intends to adopt the 17th package of sanctions against Russia by May 20.

On May 10, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said it was an empty matter to intimidate Russia with sanctions. He noted that the country has already become accustomed to sanctions and knows how to mitigate their consequences after their introduction.
