Mixing alcohol with carbonated drinks is a common practice. However, this combination leads to a significant increase in the load on the body. Daria Khaikina, an endocrinologist and nutritionist at the SM Clinic, told Gazeta about this on May 12.Ru».

As the expert pointed out, one of the main reasons is the accelerated absorption of alcohol. Carbon dioxide in soda irritates the gastric mucosa, increasing its permeability, which causes alcohol to enter the bloodstream faster, Khaikina explained. As a result, intoxication occurs faster and stronger, and control is lost earlier than expected.

Another negative factor that the doctor mentioned is the double burden on the liver and pancreas. According to her, these organs are most vulnerable to sugars and toxins, and the combination of alcohol and soda makes them work in an enhanced mode. This is not just about increased stress, but about a real overload, especially if several such cocktails are consumed in a row, which happens quite often, the nutritionist noted.

The third problem is the high calorie content. The endocrinologist noticed that popular mixes like whiskey-Cola, rum-Cola or vodka with lemonade contain a huge amount of sugar, which does not give a feeling of satiety, but provokes weight gain.

In addition, another risk is sudden fluctuations in blood sugar levels. The expert said that sweet soda causes a sharp spike in glucose, and alcohol slows down its processing. This can lead to weakness, trembling, sweating, and in some cases even hypoglycemia, especially in people with metabolic disorders, the doctor warned.

Khaikina stressed that a cocktail is not just a "light drink", but often a hidden dose of alcohol plus excess sugar. To minimize the harm, she recommended following the measure: for women, one cocktail per evening is considered the safe norm, for men — no more than two. The doctor also advised to choose less strong options (up to 20-25 g of pure alcohol), avoid excessively sweet ingredients, eat well before drinking alcohol and do not forget to drink water during the evening.

Earlier, on May 3, Anna Bunova, a researcher at the Department of Primary Prevention of Chronic Noncommunicable Diseases in the healthcare system at the National Research Medical Center for Therapy and Preventive Medicine of the Russian Ministry of Health, told Izvestia that alcohol cannot be used to fight a hangover. The use of alcoholic beverages as a "medicine" is a dangerous myth, as as a result, the body undergoes a new attack.
