Zakharova criticized new Moldovan textbooks for distorting history

Maria Zakharova, the official representative of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation, called the contents of the new Moldovan textbooks "outright lies and distortions of history" for presenting Russia as a party to the Transnistrian conflict. She made the corresponding statement on May 11, answering a question from Izvestia.
"This could be called incredible stupidity if it were not incredible meanness, outright lies and shameless distortion of history," the diplomat noted.
Zakharova recalled that this conflict arose in the late 1980s against the backdrop of the collapse of the USSR, when Chisinau began to infringe on the rights of the Russian-speaking population, and nationalist forces put forward the slogan of unification with Romania. Russia has been acting as a peacemaker since 1992 — its 14th army stopped the bloodshed, and then Moscow became the guarantor of peace agreements, the official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry said. As the diplomat pointed out, the negotiation process has been frozen since 2019 due to Chisinau's position and the Ukrainian crisis.
She also stressed that Russia's accusations of fueling the conflict are a politically motivated fabrication that ignores the long—standing peacekeeping efforts of the Russian side.
"Russia's position regarding the solution of the Transnistrian problem remains unchanged. <...> We are in favor of normalizing the dialogue between Chisinau and Tiraspol, and their compliance with previously reached agreements," Zakharova concluded.
Earlier in the day, it became known that a new Moldovan high school history textbook claims that Chisinau was at war with Russia over Transnistria. According to the theses of the publication, Moldova tried to maintain its integrity, while the Russian Federation allegedly continued to pursue its interests.
