The European Union (EU) plans to impose restrictions against 149 tankers that are linked to Russia. This was reported on May 12 by the online publication EUobserver.

"Inclusion in the list means that they will be prohibited from entering EU ports or using the services of EU shipping companies, such as insurance, repairs or refueling," the article says.

According to the publication, the decision will come into force on May 20.

Earlier in the day, German government spokesman Stefan Cornelius said that Germany would impose sanctions on Russia if Moscow refused to conclude a ceasefire agreement in Ukraine by the end of the day.

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, French President Emmanuel Macron, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk and British Prime Minister Keir Starmer on May 10 called on Russia to agree on a full 30-day ceasefire.

On the same day, Macron allowed the introduction of new sanctions in the event of Russia's refusal from Kiev's terms of the truce. In turn, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov stressed that intimidating Russia with sanctions is "an empty matter."
