- Romanian presidential candidate Simion announced his desire to create an alliance with Hungary

The leader of the opposition Alliance for the Unification of Romanians party, George Simion, is seeking an alliance with Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban. This was reported on May 12 by Euronews TV channel.
Simion called himself a "Eurorealist" and stressed that he was not a Eurosceptic.
"I would like to follow in Viktor Orban's footsteps in many aspects. Of course, we have some red lines, of course, our positions differ in some aspects, but Viktor Orban has proved that he fights for the family, for democracy, for Christianity in the EU institutions, so they will be our partners," he said.
Simion also added that he supports the Republican Party of the United States and President Donald Trump. According to him, Bucharest will be a serious partner for Washington on the eastern flank of NATO. In addition, he expressed concern about the realization of the rights and freedoms of Romanians living in Ukraine, and spoke out against the supply of weapons to Kiev.
On May 4, it became known about Simion's leadership in the first round of the Romanian presidential election with 42.28% of the vote. The second round of the Romanian presidential election is scheduled for May 18.
Vadim Trukhachev, Associate Professor of the Department of Foreign Regional Studies and Foreign Policy at the Russian State University of Economics, in an interview with Izvestia on May 6, cited his position on the Ukrainian conflict as the reason for Simion's victory in the first round of the presidential election. The expert noted that the majority of Romanians are close to Simion's priorities regarding the state budget.
