- Trump announced a possible trip to Istanbul on the day of possible negotiations between Russia and Ukraine

On May 12, US President Donald Trump announced that he was considering the possibility of his visit to Istanbul on the day of potential direct talks between Moscow and Kiev on resolving the conflict in Ukraine.
"I was thinking about flying there. I do not know where I will be on Thursday, I have so many meetings, but I was thinking about actually flying there. I think there is such an opportunity," the American leader said during a joint press conference with U.S. Secretary of Health Robert Kennedy Jr., which was broadcast on the White House YouTube channel.
He also expressed the hope that Russian leader Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky would arrive in Istanbul on the same day.
In the same speech, Trump said that a potential meeting between representatives of the Russian Federation and Ukraine would be very important, and expressed confidence that great results would be achieved during the contacts.
Earlier in the day, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said that Russia's approach to direct negotiations with Ukraine met with understanding and support from the leaders of many states. He also stressed that the Russian Federation is committed to a serious search for ways of a long-term peaceful settlement.
On May 11, Russian President Vladimir Putin announced that Russia was offering Ukraine to resume direct talks in Istanbul on May 15. Peskov later said that the proposal voiced by the President of the Russian Federation indicates a real desire for peace.
