Specialists of the Russian Children's Clinical Hospital (RDKB) The Russian Ministry of Health restored the face of a boy who was seriously injured as a result of a tractor collision. This was announced on May 13 by the hospital's press service.

It is reported that multi-stage surgical treatment was required to restore the scalp and limbs.

According to the RDCB, five-year-old Timofey was injured in an accident in the Orenburg region, where he was run over by a tractor in June last year. The child suffered severe injuries: loss of a third of the entire scalp, scalped wounds to limbs, face, head, fractures of an arm and leg.

In a serious condition, Timofey was urgently hospitalized in the RCB in medical sedation on a ventilator.

Igor Isaev, a pediatric surgeon at the Department of Reconstructive Plastic Surgery at the Russian Children's Hospital, noted that the injuries affected a third of the boy's head surface, but did not touch the muscles and facial nerves, which made it possible to preserve facial expressions.

The boy's recovery was handled by a team of RCB doctors: intensive care specialists stabilized vital functions, and traumatologists and plastic surgeons jointly assessed the extent of the damage and developed a treatment plan.

It is specified that at the first stage, specialists recorded limb fractures and treated wounds on the arms and legs, including using a surgical method of moving local tissues. Skin grafting and subsequent engraftment were required to restore the face.

"After three weeks of preparation, we performed the most difficult surgery — plastic surgery with a free skin graft. Since the defect was very large, the graft consisted of several fragments. The skin was taken from the side surface of the body, where it is closest in texture to the skin of the face. We carefully sutured the donor areas from where the skin was taken to minimize further scarring," Isaev said.

The RDCB reported that the operation was successful, and full recovery took 12 days, after which the child went home. At the same time, the functions and facial expressions were completely preserved.

In the future, the child will have to undergo laser correction of scars and tissues so that the skin color and texture are as close to natural as possible.

On March 11, the RDCB successfully completed a multi-stage surgical treatment of a 16-year-old girl with a rare scalp formation, and also prevented its degeneration into a malignant tumor. It is noted that the girl from the Volgograd region had a neoplasm from birth, and attempts at laser correction and cryodestruction did not bring results.
