Dmitry Sherikh, chairman of the St. Petersburg branch of the Union of Journalists of Russia (UJR), called the situation with the attack on a journalist of the 78 TV channel an egregious incident.

"We, as journalists, must express our full solidarity — any such violations of the rights of a journalist are unacceptable. Fortunately, this doesn't happen very often in our city," Sherikh told Izvestia.

According to him, such cases are related to a lack of understanding of the fundamentals of the rights of journalists and ignorance of the consequences of such actions.

Earlier on May 12, it became known that an unknown man attacked Alyona Chernysheva, a correspondent of the 78 TV channel, during her work, when she was communicating with neighbors of an 18-year-old teenager who suffered from a firecracker explosion.

According to the TV channel, the man struck the correspondent and knocked her down, after which he dragged her along the ground and began to strangle her. The girl managed to fight back, but the unknown man hit her in the face several more times.

Later that day, the official representative of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia, Irina Volk, announced that the investigation department of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia in the Nevsky district of St. Petersburg had opened a criminal case into the attack on Alyona Chernysheva, a correspondent of the 78 TV channel.

Another criminal case was also initiated under Part 3 of Article 144 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation ("Obstruction of the legitimate professional activities of journalists combined with violence against a journalist").
