Sick leave in Russia can be obtained not only for illness, but there are a number of other reasons why the law allows you to issue a disability certificate. In addition, it should be borne in mind that sick leave payments depend on the length of service in the company. Olga Chirikova, senior lecturer at the Department of Civil Law Disciplines at Plekhanov Russian University of Economics, told Izvestia about this on May 12.

According to her, people who care for sick family members can apply for a disability certificate. In addition, a valid reason for applying for sick leave is the need for quarantine — if a person has been in contact with a patient.

"For inpatient prosthetics, pregnancy and childbirth, as well as the adoption of a child under the age of three months, a sick leave is also required," the specialist added.

However, she explained that in order to understand the amount of the sick leave payment, it is necessary to determine the average earnings per day, taking into account the income for the previous two years. The daily amount of the benefit depends on the length of insurance: for people with less than 5 years of experience — 60% of earnings, from 5 to 8 years — 80%, over 8 years — 100%.

It is worth considering the specifics of applying for sick leave on business trips abroad. The expert said that in this case, you need to get a document from a foreign medical institution confirming the fact of the disease. Then it is necessary to make a notarized translation of this document and provide it to the employer.

"On the basis of these documents, a Russian—issued sick leave is issued in a Russian medical organization, which is the basis for the payment of temporary disability benefits," Chirikova said.

According to her, Russian legislation provides for various cases in which an employee can receive sick leave and related payments, but it is important to follow established procedures and deadlines for completing the necessary documents and receiving benefits.

Earlier, on May 12, Chirikova told Izvestia how to receive a sick leave payment if an employee has already quit. According to her, according to current legislation, a former employee can apply for a disability certificate if the illness occurred within 30 calendar days after dismissal. The key condition is that at the time of the illness, the person should not be officially employed in a new organization.
