Berlin is ready to support Kiev in possible negotiations on a peaceful settlement of the conflict in Ukraine, which may take place in Istanbul. This was announced on May 12 at a briefing of the Cabinet of Ministers of Germany by the official representative of the German government, Stefan Cornelius.

"There is a willingness on the part of the federal government to attend [the talks in Istanbul], and this is currently being agreed upon. In essence, it will be about negotiations between Russia and Ukraine. Nevertheless, support from European partners will be offered," he said at the event, which was broadcast on Epoch TV's YouTube channel.

Cornelius noted that the decision on whether to hold talks without a cease-fire should be taken by Kiev. He added that Russia had made a clear offer to Ukraine.

In addition, at the same briefing, Cornelius said that Germany would impose sanctions against Russia if Moscow refused to conclude a ceasefire agreement in Ukraine by the end of the day on May 12. A spokesman for the German government added that restrictive measures against Russia will be prepared jointly with Berlin's European partners.

On May 11, Putin announced that Russia was offering Ukraine to resume direct talks in Istanbul on May 15. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov later said that the proposal voiced by the Russian president indicates a real desire for peace.
