At the end of April, applications for the Global Energy Award, one of the most prestigious industry awards, were accepted for significant scientific discoveries and technological solutions aimed at the rational use of natural resources and improving the environmental friendliness of energy. In 2025, the award received 90 nominations from 44 countries and territories. Thus, compared to 2024, when representatives of 25 states participated in the nomination process, the number of participants in the nomination process has almost doubled.

The largest number of applications came from Russia (15), the USA (11), China and India (8 each). For the first time in the history of the award, Cuba, Palestine and Thailand presented the nominees. In addition, Germany, Austria, Tanzania, Lithuania, Denmark, France, Iran and Taiwan (China) returned to the nomination process. Although these countries and territories were not represented among the nominees, they made a significant contribution to the expansion of the competition base by submitting nomination submissions to colleagues from other countries. Latin America, Asia and Africa are widely represented.

"The Global Energy Award serves as a driver of progress in global energy sectors and provides a basis for solving strategic tasks in the fuel and energy sector. Thanks to the award, fundamental research is being developed in practice, and talented scientists have the opportunity to present their discoveries on the international stage. This is precisely the main objective of the Global Energy Award," said Alexander Novak, Deputy Prime Minister of the Russian Federation.

25 applications were submitted in the "Traditional Energy" nomination, 35 applications were registered in the "Non–traditional Energy" nomination, and 30 applications were registered in the "New Energy Applications" nomination.

Such a large-scale representation was the result of consistent work by the management of the Global Energy Association to promote the award and actively expand its geography.

"When we announced the start of the 2025 nomination cycle last December, I expressed confidence in the growing number of applications from developing countries, especially from South America, the world leader in the use of renewable energy sources, and Africa, where there remains a high potential for the extraction of traditional resources while increasing demand for autonomous energy systems. Today we see that these expectations have been fulfilled: the geography of participants has expanded, the number of projects presented has increased, and the quality of scientific solutions from new regions is simply admirable. I believe this is a significant confirmation of the international authority of our award," said Sergey Brilev, President of the association.

The completion of the application process marks the end of the first stage of the nomination cycle. Further, the applications will be evaluated by independent experts according to a fixed set of criteria, including scientific novelty, practical significance and application potential. According to the evaluation results, fifteen applications (five in each of the three nominations) with the highest score will be included in the shortlist. In the final, the laureates will be selected by an international Committee chaired by Nobel Prize laureate Rae Kwon Chung.

"The geography of the award's participants is expanding every year, and 2025 was no exception. This suggests that scientific knowledge in the field of energy has a unique ability to unite people regardless of geopolitical borders. Despite the differences in national and technological approaches, all participants are united in their desire to achieve the main goal of science – to create a sustainable and affordable energy future for all mankind. I highly appreciate the level of the nominations presented and look forward to the new stage," Rae Kwon Chung commented on the results of the first stage.

The names of the Global Energy Award winners will be announced in July 2025 in Krasnoyarsk. The award ceremony will take place within the framework of the International Forum "Russian Energy Week", which will be held in Moscow from October 15 to 17, 2025 with the support of the Government of the Russian Federation, the Ministry of Energy of Russia and the Government of Moscow. The Forum is organized by the Roscongress Foundation.
