US President Donald Trump accepts the position of Russian leader Vladimir Putin against the background of an ultimatum from the leaders of the European Union (EU) on a 30-day truce in Ukraine. This was reported on May 12 by Sky News channel.

It is noted that this is how the TV channel commented on the American leader's call for the Ukrainian side to agree to Putin's proposal to hold direct talks between the countries.

"They thought they had the support of Donald Trump, but even though 30 countries demanded an unconditional cease—fire, the US president seemed to side with the Russian leader in the end," the article says.

According to the TV channel, EU representatives have long believed in their support for Trump, but currently the countries may be left "alone" in the framework of the Ukrainian conflict, due to Washington's cessation of assistance to Kiev.

On May 11, during a press conference, Putin announced that Russia was offering Ukraine to resume direct talks in Istanbul on May 15. At the same time, Russian presidential aide Yuri Ushakov said that the Kremlin would announce who would participate in the Istanbul talks.

On the same day, President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky responded to the proposal to start direct negotiations, issuing an ultimatum on a cease-fire. The Ukrainian leader noted that the initiative of the President of the Russian Federation is a positive sign, but clarified that the cease—fire is the first step towards peace.

Later, former American intelligence officer and analyst Scott Ritter noted that Putin's proposal was a brilliant maneuver and removed the issue of a 30-day truce from the agenda. He added that the president's statement returns the initiative to Russia, allowing it to dictate terms to the Ukrainian-European-American bloc.
