Congressman from the US Democratic Party Richie Torres demands to launch an investigation into President Donald Trump's plans to accept a Boeing 747-8 worth about $ 400 million as a gift from the royal family of Qatar for use as the presidential Air Force One aircraft. This was reported on May 12 by the Axios news portal with reference to an American diplomat.
"The air palace, estimated at $400 million, will be the most valuable gift ever presented to the president by a foreign government," the portal quotes him as saying.
It is clarified that the Democrats demanded an advisory opinion on compliance with federal ethics rules or remuneration regulations enshrined in the US Constitution.
Earlier, the Democratic National Committee issued a press release calling the event "another Trump scam." The official representative of Qatar, in turn, said that the plane would formally be handed over to the Pentagon as a gift from the Ministry of Defense of Qatar. The Pentagon will then retrofit the aircraft for use by the head of state, taking into account safety requirements and modifications.
Replacing the Air Force One aircraft has long been a priority for the American leader, Axios writes. Boeing has begun work on converting two 747 aircraft into next-generation Air Force One aircraft, but this process has been delayed. Their delivery was planned for 2022, but now it is expected no earlier than 2027.
On April 30, Konstantin Blokhin, a leading researcher at the RAS Center for Security Studies and an American political scientist, told Izvestia that President Trump's words about the results of the first 100 days were an exaggeration. According to the political scientist, it is impossible to achieve such results in just 3 months in power. They cannot be called "the largest in a century," the expert added.
