Latvian police have opened 67 criminal cases for the celebration of Victory Day.
Latvian police have opened 67 criminal cases and detained eight people for celebrating Victory Day. This was reported on May 10 in the press service of the country's police.
"In connection with [the celebration of] May 9, the State Police in all regions of Latvia initiated 67 administrative offenses and detained eight people," such information is quoted in the official channel of Latvian law enforcement agencies on the social network X (former. Twitter).
The ministry said that thanks to the actions of the police officers, the "activities" related to the Victory celebration took place without serious incidents, and the safety of citizens was preserved.
The photographs attached to the publication indicate that a fine of €700 will be charged for the recorded offenses. The pictures also provide information on the grounds on which the police detained people. The reasons for the detention, as specified in the department, could be symbols in clothes "broadcasting military aggression" and the launching of fireworks.
The police also asked citizens who have information about events that correspond to the "interests of Russia" to report this via the hotline of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Latvia.
In April 2023, the Latvian Seimas approved by a majority vote a law banning public events dedicated to the celebration of May 9. The ban, as expected, will not apply to celebrations on the occasion of Europe Day.
Polish police have detained a man who carried a Soviet flag to a public event. Arkadiusz Demonecki, who was detained, stressed that "this shows the bias of the police, who apparently want to revive the traditions of the garnet police during the Nazi occupation."
