The Egyptian and Qatari authorities have welcomed the intention of the Palestinian Hamas movement to release an Israeli hostage with US citizenship. The corresponding statement was published on the website of the Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs on May 11.
"Egypt and Qatar welcome Hamas' agreement to release American hostage Eden Alexander. This release is a gesture of goodwill and an encouraging step towards returning to the negotiating table to achieve a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip, the release of [Israeli] hostages and [Palestinian] prisoners," the ministry said.
The administrations of the two countries also expressed hope for the resumption of unhindered delivery of humanitarian supplies to the territory of the Gaza Strip.
On May 11, Hamas representatives expressed their intention to release U.S. citizen Eden Alexander. Dmitry Gendelman, adviser to the Office of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, confirmed these plans. According to him, this action on the part of Hamas is "a gesture of goodwill to the American side."
