Merz's work received a negative assessment from almost half of Germans
Less than 25% of German citizens are satisfied with the work of the new German Chancellor Friedrich Merz in his first days in office. This was reported by Bild on May 11.
"Currently, less than a quarter of all respondents are satisfied with the work of Chancellor Friedrich Merz. By comparison, former Chancellor Olaf Scholz was much more popular two days after his election as chancellor on December 10, 2021. At that time, 37% were satisfied with his work — 14% more than Mertz," the article says.
It is specified that the survey was conducted on May 8-9 among more than 1,000 German residents, while its margin of error was not indicated. According to the results, only 23% of respondents positively assessed Merz's work, while 49% spoke negatively about it, and 28% found it difficult to answer.
The work of the new "black and red" coalition of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) and the Christian Social Union (CSU), and the Social Democratic Party of Germany (SPD) was approved by 29% of respondents, while 46% expressed dissatisfaction. For comparison, at the start of the work of the Svetofor coalition, 37% of German residents positively assessed it.
On May 6, German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier appointed Merz as the new Chancellor of Germany. The German President congratulated the new head of the German government and wished him success. The leader of the alliance of the Christian Democratic Union and the Christian Social Union (CDU/CSU) was elected to the post of chancellor on the second attempt.
