- Zakharova: Bankova's reaction shows that Kiev did not understand Putin's proposal well
Bankova's reaction indicates that Ukraine did not correctly interpret Russian President Vladimir Putin's proposal to resume direct talks in Istanbul. This was announced on May 11 by the official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry, Maria Zakharova.
"Judging by Bankova's reaction, the transcript of the Russian president's statement was poorly read there," she told Izvestia.
According to the diplomat, Putin clearly indicated the need to discuss the root causes of the conflict in the framework of the negotiation process. Only then will it be possible to move on to the truce issues.
In addition, Zakharova noted that the Russian leader's proposal had received support from hundreds of world politicians.
Putin announced during a press conference on May 11 that Russia was offering Ukraine to resume direct talks in Istanbul on May 15. At the same time, Russian presidential aide Yuri Ushakov said that the Kremlin would announce who would participate in the Istanbul talks.
Ukrainian leader Vladimir Zelensky issued an ultimatum in response to Putin's proposal for negotiations. He said that the ceasefire should take place on May 12, after which Ukraine would be ready for a meeting in Istanbul.
