An earthquake of magnitude 4.6 was recorded near the Southern Kuril Islands, and residents of Iturup Island could feel its tremors. This was announced on May 11 by Elena Semenova, head of the Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk seismic station.
"An earthquake of magnitude 4.6 occurred in the Pacific Ocean on May 11 at 11:36 [3:36 Moscow time]," she told RIA Novosti.
She specified that the epicenter of the seismic event was located 114 km south-east of Iturup Island. The source of the tremors was located at a depth of 34 km.
On May 11, the Main Directorate (GU) of the Russian Ministry of Emergency Situations in the Republic of Tyva recorded an earthquake of magnitude 3.8 in the Todzhinsky district. It was clarified that no tremors were felt on the surface, and no calls were received from residents. The facilities located in the epicenter of the earthquake continued to operate normally.
