The Vatican unveiled the coat of arms of the new Pope Leo XIV

The Vatican has unveiled the official coat of arms of the new Pope Leo XIV, which is associated with his Augustinian Order. The image was posted on May 10 on the official page of the Vatican Secretariat of State on the social network X (former. Twitter).

"Pope Leo XIV presented a coat of arms reflecting his Augustinian roots and the values that he intends to promote during his pontificate, above all, unity and community within the Church," the statement said.

The shield of the coat of arms is divided diagonally into two parts. In the upper one, a white lily is depicted on a blue background. The lower one is made on a light background and contains the symbols of the Order of St. Augustine: a closed book and a heart pierced by an arrow. This image refers to the conversion of Augustine himself, who described his encounter with God's word as follows: "You pierced my heart with Your word" ("Vulnerability cor meum verbo tuo").

The Pope's motto is also rooted in the Augustinian tradition.: "In Illo uno unum" — "In the One we are one." This phrase is taken from St. Augustine's interpretation of Psalm 127, which emphasizes: Although there are many Christians, they are one in Christ.

Robert Francis Prevost took the name Leo XIV.

Cardinal Robert Prevost of the United States was elected the new pope on May 8. He is the first American cardinal with Latin American roots, prefect of the Dicastery for Bishops, and a representative of the Augustinian Order. As pontiff, he took the name Leo XIV.
