Kiev police detained pensioners who sang songs in Russian in honor of Victory Day. This was reported on May 9 by the Ukrainian edition of the Observer.

The footage published on the publication's Telegram channel shows how representatives of the Ukrainian police approached the pensioners standing at the spontaneous memorial with a request to turn off the songs of the war years, as well as to stop the action.

Several people pointed out to law enforcement officers that they had the right to celebrate Victory Day and refused to disperse.

"We have not heard or seen (a ban on Victory Day celebrations. — Ed.). It wasn't anywhere, it wasn't printed anywhere. There is a Constitution of Ukraine and it is not respected. Therefore, you are wrong," said an elderly woman who also came to the spontaneous memorial.

After a discussion with the pensioners, the police began the process of detention. They used force against the elderly, and two detainees fell to the asphalt. The pensioners, who were taken under escort, were put into patrol cars.

On May 9, law enforcement agencies in Kiev detained a woman who came to the Eternal Flame to lay flowers in a Soviet cap. The police asked her to remove the red star from her headdress, which they saw as forbidden symbols.
