Thousands of residents and guests of Berlin took part in commemorative events dedicated to the 80th anniversary of Victory in the Great Patriotic War (WWII). This was reported on May 9 by a correspondent of Izvestia.

Residents and guests of Berlin performed the musical composition "Katusha" and laid flowers at the memorials.

At the same time, some participants of the events faced a ban on organizing a commemorative march and provocateurs who stretched the flags of Ukraine, as well as opposed the action. Despite the pressure exerted by law enforcement agencies, one of the participants of the event continued to hum a musical composition from the war years.

"Such a holiday, 80 years is still a sacred thing," he said.

On the same day, the US Embassy in Moscow announced that the United States honors the memory of the victims of the Russian people in World War II. According to them, the victory over Nazi Germany is common.

Russian President Vladimir Putin said at the Victory Day Parade in Moscow on Red Square that the defeat of Nazism had been achieved through joint efforts, including the opening of a second front. The Russian leader noted that almost 80% of the population of many countries was involved in the Second World War. The complete defeat of Nazism was achieved by joint efforts
