The enthronement ceremony of Pope Leo XIV will take place on Sunday, May 18. This was reported on May 9 by the Associated Press, citing a statement from the Vatican published on Friday.

"Leo XIV will be officially enthroned as pope at a mass on May 18 and will hold his first general audience on May 21," the website said.

The enthronement of the pontiff is traditionally attended by delegations of high-ranking guests from all over the world.

It is noted that Leo XIV asked all heads of Vatican offices who lost their positions after the death of Pope Francis to return to their duties until further notice. He noted that he would like to devote time to "reflection, prayer and dialogue" before making final decisions about appointments.

Cardinal Robert Prevost from the United States was elected the new pope on May 8. He is the first American cardinal with Latin American roots, prefect of the Dicastery for Bishops, representative of the Augustinian Order. As pontiff, he took the name Leo XIV.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has congratulated the new pope on his election. He also wished success in fulfilling his "lofty mission, as well as good health and well-being."
