- The EU was outraged by Fico's arrival in Moscow on the 80th anniversary of the Victory

The arrival of Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico in Moscow for the parade in honor of the 80th anniversary of Victory in the Great Patriotic War (WWII) caused outrage in the European Union (EU). This was announced on May 9 by the head of the European Diplomacy, Kaya Kallas, who arrived in Ukraine that day along with other EU officials.
As Callas noted, Fico "stands on the wrong side of history."
"We are celebrating Europe Day in Europe, and I think it is very symbolic that we are here. <...> How can you stand in Moscow today? I can't understand it," she said in Lviv during a press conference of the foreign ministers of the EU countries.
According to Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov, the arrival of Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic and Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico in Moscow for celebrations marking the 80th anniversary of the Great Victory is an act of heroism, as politicians decided to visit Russia despite the obstacles they face.
More than 25 foreign leaders, as well as military personnel from Russia-friendly countries and foreign delegations attended the parade on Red Square. At the end of the meeting, Russian President Vladimir Putin thanked the foreign delegations at the reception for coming to the capital of the Russian Federation for the celebrations.
The Slovak newspaper Pravda reported on May 7 that a special aircraft of the Slovak government with Prime Minister Fico on board was banned from flying over the territories of Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia for the participation of the Slovak delegation in the celebration of Victory Day in Moscow. The Latvian Foreign Ministry explained that participation in the Kremlin's May 9 event is incompatible with the fundamental values of the European Union.
