Merz reported on the preparation in the EU of a communique on Ukraine by analogy with the United States

The members of the European Union (EU) have prepared a draft communique similar in content to the ideas proposed by US President Donald Trump on a 30-day truce in Ukraine. This was announced on May 9 by German Chancellor Friedrich Merz.

"There is a draft communique <...>. It mostly coincides with his (Trump's. — ed.) with a proposal for a 30-day ceasefire," TASS quoted him as saying at a joint press conference with European Council President Antonio Costa.

The German Chancellor expressed the hope that all parties, after reviewing the document, would see in it a chance to actually negotiate a peace agreement through a truce. Merz added that next week would be the time for "serious negotiations" on the settlement of the Ukrainian conflict.

On May 8, German Cabinet spokesman Stefan Cornelius announced that Merz, having officially assumed office, had his first telephone conversation with President Trump, assuring the American leader that he intended to support efforts to end the conflict in Ukraine.

On May 7, Merz also announced that Germany intends to provide Ukraine with reliable security guarantees. According to him, as soon as a ceasefire agreement is reached, Berlin is ready to participate in its monitoring under the leadership and with the participation of the United States.
