Russian diplomats plan to hold new consultations between the Russian Federation and the United States on the restoration of the embassies. As Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov noted on May 9, there is an understanding that progress has been made in this direction.

"Yes, it will be, while there are no dates. But there is an understanding that contact is necessary. This direction is basically working, there is progress, we need to increase it," RIA Novosti quoted him as saying.

As the senior diplomat added, if the United States does not radically change its policy towards Russia for the better, there will be no prospects for maintaining the Strategic Offensive Arms Treaty (START Treaty).

Economic issues also appear in the contacts between the Russian Federation and the United States, but at present they are not the main ones. The key topics for conversation with Washington today are different, Ryabkov noted.

On April 14, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said that Moscow and Washington have an understanding of how to proceed with the reopening of embassies. The minister said that the dialogue on this issue is gradually improving, while there is a desire on both sides to resume the work of embassies.

He also added that Washington had not sent proposals to Moscow to discuss strategic relations in a bilateral format. As Lavrov noted, if the Russian Federation receives a corresponding proposal, the Russian side will outline its vision of equal negotiations.
