Merz and Trump agreed to cooperate to end the conflict in Ukraine

Upon officially taking office, new German Chancellor Friedrich Merz held his first telephone conversation with US President Donald Trump, assuring the American leader that he intends to support efforts to end the conflict in Ukraine. This was announced on May 8 by the official representative of the Cabinet of Germany Stefan Cornelius.
"Chancellor Merz assured the American president that 80 years after the end of World War II, the United States remains an indispensable friend and partner of Germany. President Trump and Chancellor Merz have agreed to work closely together to end the military conflict in Ukraine," a statement on the Bundestag website said.
Cornelius noted that Trump promised the head of the German government to vigorously support Germany's efforts together with France, Great Britain, Poland, as well as other European partners "to achieve long-term peace."
"At the same time, President Trump and Chancellor Merz were united in their desire to resolve trade differences as soon as possible," he said.
Trump congratulated Merz on his election as German chancellor, the politicians "agreed on a close exchange of views" and promised to pay mutual visits to the United States and Germany.
On May 7, Merz announced that Germany intends to provide Ukraine with reliable security guarantees. According to him, as soon as a ceasefire agreement is reached, Berlin is ready to participate in its monitoring under the leadership and with the participation of the United States.
On the same day, at a meeting in Paris with French President Emmanuel Macron, Merz said he intended to reset relations between the two countries in order to strengthen the European Union. Macron, in turn, stressed that the parties will continue to work towards achieving a 30-day ceasefire in Ukraine.
