Moscow has doubts about the impartiality of the current German Foreign Minister, Annalena Burbock, who has been nominated for the post of President of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA). This was announced on May 9 by Dmitry Polyansky, First Deputy Permanent Representative of Russia to the world Organization.

"The sudden nomination of Annalena Burbok as a candidate for the post of President of the General Assembly surprised many people. After all, Germany, which was entrusted with this privilege by the Western European Group, whose turn it is to nominate a candidate this year, has already nominated former OSCE chief Helga Schmid for this post," he told RIA Novosti.

Polyansky explained that many people like Schmid as a candidate more than Berbok, who, according to him, has already done a lot as head of the German Foreign Ministry, which "does not fit in with how the chairman of the UNGA should act."

He recalled that Berbok is also disliked because of the persistent promotion of priorities that many UN member states do not share, which makes them worry whether she will be able to act impartially.

Ruslan Andreev, a political consultant, told Izvestia on April 21 that Berbok's nomination for the post of head of the UN General Assembly was a strategic failure of Germany. According to him, in the countries of the Global South, the politician is perceived not as a neutral diplomat and a defender of German interests, but as an ideological activist who constantly broadcasts a "Euroglobalist" view of the world.
