- Welt learned about Merz's intention to declare an emergency in Germany due to refugees

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has announced that he will declare an emergency in the country due to problems with migrants. This was reported on May 8 by the German newspaper Die Welt, citing government sources.
"The goal is to activate article 72 of the Treaty on the Functioning of the European Union. Neighboring countries will be informed," the article said.
This article provides for the possibility of denying asylum to refugees, and is accompanied by increased border controls and accelerated deportation procedures.
After the entry into force of the article, the Dublin Agreement will be terminated, which will give the German authorities the opportunity to strengthen border controls and refuse asylum applicants.
The Bild newspaper reported on May 7 that migrants would be banned from entering all German land borders, even if they applied for asylum. On this day, the Minister of the Interior of Germany, Alexander Dobrindt, gave an oral order to the German Federal Police Department to strengthen border control and increase refusals when trying to enter the country.
Friedrich Merz, who took office as Chancellor of Germany, noted on April 9, as a candidate for this post, that Germany intends to strengthen control over migration in the country. In addition, he stressed that the relevant measures will be strengthened at the borders of the state. German citizenship will be available again only after five years of residence in the country.
