The European Commission (EC) intends to adopt the 17th package of sanctions against Russia by May 20. This was stated on May 8 by the head of EU diplomacy, Kaya Kallas, at a press conference following the meeting of EU foreign ministers in Warsaw.

"As for the 17th package of sanctions, we intend to adopt it at the Council on Foreign Affairs, which will be held on May 20 <...> We must make more efforts, and our pressure and sanctions are one of the tools," she said, refusing to talk about the contents of the new package, "since it has not yet been agreed."".

Kallas also clarified the EU's position, saying that sanctions against Russia will not be lifted after the end of the conflict in Ukraine. She added that the EU intends to lift sanctions "only after compensating Ukraine for all the damage."

In an interview with The Financial Times on April 30, the head of the European Diplomacy said that the European Union (EU) is considering a scenario for maintaining sanctions against Russia, even if the United States lifts them. According to her, the EU is also preparing an action plan in case the United States withdraws from negotiations on a peaceful settlement.
