Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin took part in a wreath-laying ceremony at the Grave of the Unknown Soldier.
"Today, bowing our heads at the Eternal Flame, we pay tribute to those whose names have forever remained in the annals of Victory," he wrote on his Telegram channel.
According to the mayor, this event is "not just a tradition or a ritual, but a way to express our deepest respect to those who gave us peace."
This year, on May 9, the 80th anniversary of victory in the Great Patriotic War is celebrated. As Russian President Vladimir Putin stated at the end of April, this day is a special holiday for the whole country.
"Victory Day and everything that happened during the Second World War and, as we say for ourselves, the Great Patriotic War are, of course, the triumph of our people, the triumph of the Soviet people and the Russian people," the head of state said at a meeting with participants of the educational marathon "Knowledge.The first ones."
Putin, in particular, stressed that it is possible to correctly determine the future of the Russian Federation only if one understands the price of victory in the Great Patriotic War. The Victory Anniversary parade will be held on Moscow's Red Square on May 9.
