Recently, there have been more and more publications on the Internet about the increase in cases of fraud involving the use of SIM boxes. This was reported to Izvestia on May 8 by experts from the Roskachestvo Center for Digital Expertise.

A SIM box is a device that provides remote access to a combined number of SIM cards. Thanks to this, the attackers can call and send messages to an unlimited number of subscribers, the department said. According to their data, the complex is actively used by most of the fraudulent call centers.

It is clarified that the scammers pose as employees of Internet service providers and offer earnings for "testing equipment" in order to improve communication, but in reality they are looking for front persons to install SIM boxes to bypass the blocking and service foreign call centers. In addition, fraudsters pay potential victims a small amount in order to deflect suspicion from themselves.

"Criminal groups obtain activated SIM cards illegally, purchasing them, as a rule, from corrupt employees of communication salons and other people who have access to illegal activation. These offers are in constant demand on the darknet, where trade in such services is flourishing. Prices for activated SIM cards are low and usually amount to 500 rubles apiece," said Sergey Kuzmenko, head of the Roskachestvo Center for Digital Expertise.

Roskachestvo urged Russians to remain vigilant and not pursue easy earnings, particularly in the digital sphere.

On May 5, employees of the FSB of Russia and the Department of the Vladimir Region department detained members of a criminal community who helped telephone fraudsters carry out illegal actions throughout the country using a large number of SIM cards. Criminal cases have been initiated under Parts 1 and 2 of Articles 210 of the Criminal Code ("Creation and participation in a criminal community"), Part 5 of Article 33, Part 3 of Article 207 of the Criminal Code ("Complicity in knowingly false reporting of an act of terrorism").

Since April 1, the Gosuslugi portal has launched a service that allows Russians to check all SIM cards issued in their name. The new tool will help identify unaccounted-for numbers that can be used by fraudsters.
