Merz called the issue of reparations to Poland legally closed.

On May 8, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz said that the issue of reparations to Poland for the crimes of the National Socialists during World War II was legally closed in the German government.
"The legal issues related to possible reparations have been resolved, but this does not mean that we cannot talk about joint projects and common ideas about how we see a future together," the Chancellor stressed.
Merz noted that in order to maintain the security of the entire European Union, its member countries simply need to be together in order to feel support and find shelter from external threats.
He also outlined his personal position on debt obligations to other States. The German Chancellor stressed that he would try to make every effort to normalize and harmonize the processes taking place in the European alliance.
Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk said on May 7 that Warsaw no longer intends to demand monetary compensation from Berlin for the damage caused during the Nazi occupation. He noted that at the moment, the two European powers face new challenges regarding the conclusion of bilateral treaties and ensuring pan-European security.
