The military personnel of the Vostok group of forces provided targeted assistance to veterans of the Great Patriotic War (WWII) who live in the territory of the Donetsk People's Republic. This was announced on May 8 by the Russian Defense Ministry.

"In the adjacent settlements where our temporary place of deployment is located, there are veterans of the Great Patriotic War who need some basic help: household chores, physical assistance," said a serviceman of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation with the call sign Kalach.

He noted that on the eve of Victory Day, the military pays special attention to veterans and tries to provide them with all necessary assistance in between combat missions.

"We travel to the nearest settlements, we provide assistance to the participants of the Great Patriotic War," added the senior driver with the call sign Dzeryu.

He clarified that military personnel organize such events all the time. They independently search for veterans who need help.

WWII veteran Valentina Kharchenko, who was helped by the military group of forces "Center", said that during the war she lived in the Kursk region. In order not to starve, the children had to work constantly.

"What we just didn't do, it was in general, in childhood. They plowed on their cows, there was hunger, they dug up potatoes," she said.

On May 7, it was reported that in Lugansk, the signalmen of the Center group of forces, on the eve of the celebration of the 80th anniversary of Victory in the Great Patriotic War (WWII), congratulated veterans and residents of besieged Leningrad.
