German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has called on the United States to refrain from interfering in his country's domestic politics. He stated this in an interview with the Welt TV channel on May 7.

"This is (domestic policy. — Ed.) — our business. Therefore, we decide, not the American government," he stressed.

Merz noted that he and other representatives of Germany tried to refrain from commenting during the pre-election events in the United States. According to the politician, Berlin expects Washington to minimize political observations in the same way.

On May 6, German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier appointed Merz as the new Chancellor of Germany. He won the election for the second time, not gaining the required number of votes in the first round.
