Gemologist warned about the negative effect of sea water on jewelry

The high concentration of salts in the sea causes chemical reactions, contributing to the appearance of dark spots and tarnishing of rings, chains and bracelets made of silver, low-grade gold, copper alloys or not covered with a special protective layer. Anna Lardo, a gemologist and founder of the Lardaux jewelry company, told Izvestia on May 11.
She clarified that fakes and inexpensive jewelry will lose their attractive appearance much faster and will begin to collapse under the influence of moisture.
"Take off your jewelry before entering the water. This is the simplest solution that guarantees their safety. If it is difficult to give up accessories, it is better to replace jewelry made of soft metals with more practical options, such as yellow gold, platinum or stainless steel," she advised.
The expert recommended choosing chain models with thick weave and strong links. The thin chain can break or get caught in the sand and algae. It is also necessary to check the strength of the lock — carabiner fasteners or large fasteners with several clips will do.
"Rings and bracelets must fit tightly, otherwise they may accidentally slip right into the water. Gemstones are vulnerable to prolonged contact with water. Pearls, opals, turquoise, and diamonds begin to fade, losing their natural luster. Smooth and rounded surfaces are preferable to complex designs with protruding elements," Lardo added.
Earlier, on April 18, it was reported that in 2024, Russians increased spending on gold products with diamonds by 25% compared to 2023. The total expenditure of the population on these goods has reached 106 billion rubles. This follows from the data of the jewelry company "Alcor".
