The refusal of Lithuania and Latvia to grant permission for the flight of Serbian President Alexander Vucic's special aircraft to Russia is an egregious case. This was announced on May 7 by the official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry, Maria Zakharova.

"The EU countries continue the practice of restricting the sovereign right of states to carry out their foreign policy, using all available means for this. The current refusal is another egregious case," the diplomat is quoted as saying on the website of the Russian Foreign Ministry.

According to her, no one can destroy the strategic partnership and the centuries-old friendship between Moscow and Belgrade.

Zakharova also added that Russia would honorably celebrate Victory Day with foreign guests.

On May 6, it was reported that the authorities of Lithuania and Latvia banned Vucic's plane from crossing their airspace due to the Serbian president's intentions to visit Moscow to participate in events marking the 80th anniversary of Victory in the Great Patriotic War (WWII). The corresponding actions are caused by "political sensitivity" to the purpose of the leader's flight.
