The new Chancellor of the Federal Republic of Germany (FRG) Friedrich Merz and French President Emmanuel Macron intend to reset relations between the two countries in order to strengthen the European Union (EU). On May 7, the head of the German government stated this at a meeting with the French president in Paris.

"President Emmanuel Macron and I have also agreed to further strengthen the Franco-German Defense and Security Council," Merz said, as quoted by Reuters.

According to him, the countries will better coordinate support for Kiev and coordinate national defense issues and procurement projects more closely.

Earlier, on May 7, Merz said that Germany intends to provide Ukraine with reliable security guarantees. According to him, as soon as a ceasefire agreement is reached, Berlin is ready to participate in its monitoring under the leadership and with the participation of the United States.
