The ceasefire agreement between the United States and the Yemeni Houthis should give importance to American President Donald Trump at talks with Arab leaders in Saudi Arabia. This opinion was shared with Izvestia on May 7 by Stanislav Tarasov, a political scientist and expert on the problems of the Middle East.

According to the expert, initially the United States had few motivating reasons for military action against the Houthis.

"The attacks on the Houthis were seen as indirect pressure on Iran. But Iran declared back in March, when the United States launched the first strike, that it did not control them. <...> Apparently, Trump realized this, and an agreement was reached with the Houthis," Tarasov said.

He noted that this agreement should help the American leader in his visit to Saudi Arabia later in May.

"This is not just symbolic, but a very serious step, if only this agreement is respected. <...> Trump's peacemaking is becoming fashionable. He is going to pay a visit to Saudi Arabia, and the Arab League is meeting there. In such circumstances, his peacemaking, plus negotiations with Iran, give this visit an important significance," the political scientist said.

The expert also noted that the Trump team has a proven technique that combines calls for peace with threats of military action.

"If [the US president] refuses this reception, it means a big breakthrough. This means that they are changing the technology of operations in this region," he stressed.

In addition, Tarasov suggested that after the agreement between the American side and the Houthis, Israel would most likely not harden its actions against this movement.

"Israel understands perfectly well that the Houthis cannot be defeated by bombing and rocket attacks. A ground invasion is needed, but it is not promising, because the experience of Israel's war in Gaza has shown that it is not possible to destroy the same Hamas even through a ground operation," the political scientist summed up.

The day before, Oman's Foreign Minister Badr al-Busaidi announced that the Ansar Allah movement (Houthis) in Yemen and the United States, through the mediation of the Sultanate of Oman, had agreed on a cease-fire. The Minister noted that in the future, neither side will attack the other. This commitment includes a ban on Houthi attacks on American vessels in the Red Sea and the Bab el-Mandeb Strait.
