Friedrich Merz, who took office as German Chancellor, promised that on the first day of his work as head of government he would close the entry for migrants, but so far nothing like this has been observed on the German-Polish border. This was stated on May 7 by Alice Weidel, co-chairman of the Alternative for Germany (AfD) party.

Merz promised a "de facto ban on entry" on the "first day" of his chancellorship. Today is the first day, and we went to Gubin on the border with Poland to verify the truth of this promise. The result was not surprising," Weidel noted on her social network X (ex. Twitter).

German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier appointed Merz as the new German chancellor on May 6. In the first round of voting, Merz failed to gain enough votes to be elected head of state. He was appointed the new chancellor only for the second time.

On April 9, Merz noted that the new German government would strengthen control over illegal migration in the country. In addition, he announced plans to strengthen control at the German borders and expel migrants who are there illegally from the territory of Germany. Merz also added that German citizenship can be obtained again only after five years of residence in the country.
