There are two main types of lip products on store shelves — lip balms and lipsticks. The former work for deep hydration, the latter create a protective barrier, Maria Verichenko, head of Cosmetics at SOKOLOV brand, told Izvestia on May 8.

"If you are freezing in the wind or constantly licking your lips, no nourishing balm will save you — it is protection from external factors that is needed here. But to repair damaged skin, a high—quality moisturizing balm will be just right," she explained.

At the same time, according to her, the main enemy of healthy lips is the obsessive habit of applying the balm too often. With excessive use, the skin loses its ability to self-regulate and the effect of "over-grooming" occurs. Fans of menthol, camphor and phenolic products that give a feeling of coolness and tingling are doubly at risk — these components can cause micro-inflammation and make lips even drier.

"When choosing the perfect product, carefully study the label. The dream formula includes three elements: moisturizers, emollients and occlusives (components that create a protective barrier and prevent moisture loss). The list of ingredients should include shea butter, squalane, glycerin, and vitamin E. They work to restore and protect. But it's better to stay away from bright scents and the "tingling" effect — these are signals of possible irritation," Verichenko noted.

The expert clarified that the skin of the lips cannot independently maintain the water balance, like the rest of the face. Therefore, it is worth expanding your makeup bag and adding night masks with a dense texture or natural jojoba or argan oils, which can be applied before bedtime. Also, mild peels with lactic acid for delicate exfoliation will not be superfluous.

"The care schedule also matters. Balsam should be applied a maximum of two to three times a day, oils - a couple of times a week, and peels — only once in seven days. This regime will help the skin to restore its own protective mechanisms," said the specialist.

Lack of water in the body, deficiency of B vitamins, too strict diets and stress instantly affect the appearance of the lips. Dry indoor air, frosty wind outside and the habit of smoking lead to peeling.

"The most underrated beauty recommendation is taking care of yourself from the inside out. Fill your diet with foods with healthy fats (an avocado toast at breakfast or a handful of nuts as a snack is ideal), enrich the menu with red fish and drink enough water. These simple habits, combined with well—chosen products, will help you forget about the dependence on the balm and keep your lips beautiful at any time of the year — without having to look in the mirror every 10 minutes," concluded Verichenko.

Earlier, on April 16, Natalia Mikhailova, a cosmetologist and creator of the MESALTERA by Dr. Mikhaylova brand of professional cosmeceuticals, told Izvestia that mild cleansers should be used in the warm season: foams, gels or mousses with the addition of acids or enzymes. They effectively dissolve sebum and impurities without damaging the skin. At the same time, aggressive formulations and excessive mechanical peeling should be avoided.
