Merz announced his intention to provide Ukraine with reliable security guarantees

Germany intends to provide Ukraine with reliable security guarantees. This was announced on May 7 by the new German Chancellor Friedrich Merz after a meeting with French President Emmanuel Macron.
According to him, as soon as a ceasefire agreement is reached, Berlin is ready to participate in its monitoring under the leadership and with the participation of the United States.
"Together with our partners, we will also provide Ukraine with reliable security guarantees. And together with our partners, we will make sure that Ukraine can continue to defend itself from any further aggression today and in the future," he said.
The head of the German government clarified that he could not announce specific parameters of security guarantees without a lasting ceasefire agreement. He called the involvement of the American side in the process important.
In addition, Merz announced his visit to Ukraine in the coming weeks. The dates have not yet been agreed.
German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier appointed Merz as the new German chancellor on May 6. In the first round of voting, Merz failed to gain enough votes to be elected head of state. He was appointed the new chancellor only for the second time.
Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova, commenting on Merz's election as chancellor, said that changes in the German government would not play any role for Russia. According to her, Moscow is ready for any scenario in relations with Berlin.
