Melanoma of the skin is one of the most aggressive types of cancer that develops from pigment cells (melanocytes). Daria Smirnova, a dermatovenerologist at the European Medical Center (EMC), told Izvestia on May 11.

"There are no absolutely safe moles. Some of them are more prone to developing into malignant tumors, while others are less likely. That's why it's so important to have regular checkups with a dermatologist and have a dermatoscopy," she said.

The doctor recommended visiting a specialist at least once a year, as well as independently examining the skin using the ABCDE system. In this system, A indicates the asymmetry of the mole, B indicates uneven edges, C indicates color changes, D indicates a diameter of more than 6 mm, and E indicates a rapid transformation within 4-6 months.

"If you notice such changes, new dark spots appear, ulcers that do not heal for a long time, itching or bleeding, contact your doctor immediately," the specialist noted.

The main risk factor is ultraviolet radiation. Sunburn, especially in childhood, as well as frequent visits to tanning salons significantly increase the likelihood of developing melanoma. It is important to use SPF-protected products and to protect the skin with clothing.

People with more than 50 moles on their bodies, with a hereditary predisposition, with fair skin, hair and eyes, and who have previously suffered skin cancer are also at risk.

"Melanoma has four stages, and the earlier this type of cancer is detected, the better the prognosis. Surgical removal is sufficient at stages 0–II, and at stages III–IV, immuno- and targeted therapy is used," Smirnova summed up.

Earlier, on April 10, oncologist, oncosurgeon of JSC "Medicine" (Academician Roitberg Clinic), PhD Ruslan Basanov told Izvestia about products that reduce the risk of cancer. According to him, scientific studies confirm that some products contain substances capable of suppressing the growth of tumor cells and strengthening the immune system. The expert identified a group of products with antitumor properties.
