Fico called the EC's roadmap for abandoning gas from Russia an economic suicide.

Agreeing to the European Commission's (EC) roadmap, which provides for the gradual abandonment of Russian gas, nuclear energy, and oil, would be economic suicide. This was announced on May 7 by Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico.
"It's just economic suicide to agree that neither gas, nor nuclear energy, nor oil, nothing [should be supplied from the Russian Federation], all [supplies] should stop just because a new iron curtain is being built between the Western world and, possibly, the Russian Federation, as well as other countries." — he noted.
According to him, the EC has provided a roadmap to end the import of Russian energy, which is unacceptable to the Slovak government. Fico also drew attention to the need to consider the development of legislative proposals, since "the devil is in the details."
He expressed the opinion that if the EC proposal is supported, then the countries will inflict great damage on themselves. In this case, the European Union (EU) will suffer more than the Russian Federation, which can already be seen in the example of the introduction of anti-Russian sanctions.
With the cessation of gas supplies from Russia, countries will become dependent on someone else, Fico added. He also suggested that states would then switch to a "liquefied" US resource. According to the Prime Minister of Slovakia, this ideological decision was not made based on common sense.
On May 6, Reuters reported that the European Commission would propose banning new gas agreements with Russia and existing spot contracts by the end of 2025. In turn, Bloomberg informed about the EC's plans to publish a roadmap for eliminating imports of Russian fossil fuels by 2027.
