The new German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, in an interview with ZDF TV channel on May 7, refused to comment on possible deliveries of German Taurus cruise missiles to Ukraine.

"Zelensky knows that he can rely on me and on Germany," he said, answering a question about whether Kiev can count on the supply of Taurus cruise missiles.

The Chancellor added that he plans to continue the dialogue with France and the UK on the Ukrainian issue.

"I will discuss these issues intensively with the British Prime Minister and the French president, and I will try to ensure that we make decisions together, act together if possible, and make decisions in advance," the German prime minister added.

In mid-April, Merz, in an interview with ARD TV channel, commented on Germany's delivery of Taurus cruise missiles to Ukraine, specifying that this could happen in coordination with European partners. In response, German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius said there were "many arguments" against such a decision. Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said Moscow would regard a strike by German Taurus missiles on any Russian targets as Berlin's participation in the fighting on Kiev's side.

On May 6, German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier appointed Merz as the new Chancellor of Germany. He won the election for the second time, not gaining the required number of votes in the first round.
