The election of Friedrich Merz as the new German chancellor and the subsequent changes in the German government will not play any role for Russia. This was stated on May 7 by the official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry, Maria Zakharova, in an interview with RIA Novosti.

"In recent years, Germany has so lost the remnants of its sovereignty, authority and role in international affairs that a change of faces on the Berlin political Olympus does not play a significant role," the diplomat said.

At the same time, Zakharova stressed that Moscow is ready for any scenario in relations with Berlin.

She also added that even with the beginning of the formation of a new government in Germany, Russia has no expectations that relations between the countries can improve after all the Russophobic statements made in the Bundestag. As the representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry stressed, "Russia is ready for any development of events."

On May 6, German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier appointed Merz as the new Chancellor of Germany. Since he could not get enough votes to be elected head of state in the first round of voting, he was appointed the new chancellor only for the second time.
