American leader Donald Trump's recent words that it was the United States that made the greatest contribution to the Victory belong to the category of deeply erroneous, Federation Council Speaker Valentina Matviyenko said in an interview with Izvestia.

"To the category of deeply erroneous. Said for populist, domestic political conjunctural reasons. They have not the slightest historical basis. Contradicting objective facts, which are available in a wide variety of documents and literature, including English-language ones. Everything is unambiguous there. The greatest and undeniable contribution to the victory over German fascism was made by the Red Army and the Soviet people," Valentina Matvienko told Izvestia.

Trump earlier said the US had made the most significant contribution to the victory in World War II.

"We won two world wars, but we never put it to our credit, as everyone else does. Allies around the world celebrate our victory in World War II. The only country that doesn't celebrate is the United States. The victory was won only because of us," he wrote on social media.
